4x4 Beach Driving.
Vehicle Safety.
Prepare your 4x4 for beach driving by lowering tire pressure to 20 PSI. Free “Air Up Stations” are located at the Historic Corolla Park and at Sun Realty’s Corolla Office. We also suggest driving during low tide, and to bring a shovel.
Community Safety.
Be alert around pedestrians (especially children), wild horses, and other wildlife. The speed limit is 35 MPH. If you are within 300 feet of any person, the speed limit is 15 MPH. Parking is prohibited until Mile Post 14, or the first 1.5 miles.
Watch Out.
Stumps of a petrified forest dot a path along the coastline, and are especially exposed during the winter. Be sure to drive around them, and keep your eyes peeled for unexpected dips and deep ruts in your driving lane. Maintain etiquette and try to keep right from oncoming traffic.
Video Beach Tour.
This video from the Currituck County Sheriff’s Office is a helpful resource, and its footage shows what it’s like entering and driving along the beach. Lastly, don’t forget your Beach Parking Permit.

Wild Horse Etiquette
Deep Blue is a popular hangout for the Corolla Wild Horses. You’ll see them regularly from our decks, grazing and playing around the property. All of the photos below were captured a few steps beyond our front door.
Do Not Feed.
Our wild horses can only digest natural beach grasses. It is illegal to feed them apples, carrots, and other snacks. Doing so will cause colic and may result in a painful death. With roughly 100 wild horses left on our beaches, please help them thrive. Never touch and resist the temptation to feed.
Maintain Distance.
We’re lucky to maintain a fine balance of sharing space with our wild horses in the 4x4. Like us, the herd has family dynamics and they’re protective of their kin. For this reason, they can be unpredictable and it’s extremely important to stay at least 50 feet away for all our safety.
Herd Watcher.
We invite you to help us actively protect and defend the wild horses. Please call the Currituck County Sheriff’s Dispatch at 252-232-2216 if you see someone who is disrespecting the horses, or if you see a horse in distress.
Wild Horse FAQs.
The Corolla Wild Horse Fund is dedicated to protecting, conserving, and responsibly managing the herd of wild Colonial Spanish Mustangs that roam freely on the northernmost Currituck Outer Banks. For their explanation on why we must not feed and maintain our distance, visit their FAQs.
